Opening of the Bjørnson festival exhibition 2023
Welcome to the opening Wednesday 6th of September at 4 pm!
Máret Ánne Sara lives and works in Kautokeino (Norway). She studied English Language and Literature at the University of Tromsø, Indigenous Journalism at the Sámi University College, Kautokeino, and Art and Illustration at the Arts University in Bournemouth, UK. In Kautokeino she also trained as a product designer and was editor of chief at the Sámi youth magazine Š Nuoraidmagasiidna. Máret Ánne Sara is the initiator and artistic leader of the Sámi artist network Dáiddadállu. Her artistic work has been shown in exhibitions since 2003. She became internationally known through her participation in documenta 14 with her art project Pile o’ Sápmi. As an artist, author, and journalist, Máret Ánne Sara focuses on the oppression of Indigenous peoples in the perspective of new Scandinavian colonialism. Her work consistently deals with a reflection of and the survival of Indigenous Sámi culture and philosophy. Having an underlying political motivation, her practice often addresses the immediate experience of the Sámi culture and the real existential threats that they and their livelihoods face. Consequently, she sees art, in addition to journalistic work, as another form and possibility of social communication. Máret Ánne Sara herself comes from a family of reindeer herders. She was part of a group of artists who formed the 2022 Sami Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.
