Electronic Flora – an audiovisual installation by the duo Lerin/Hystad. Electronic Flora documents some of the plants in our ecosystem that are now undergoing major changes through the Anthropocene. Biologists Elisabeth Schussler and James Wandersee talk about the concept of plant blindness, they describe it as the inability to see or recognize plants in their own environment. Unfortunately, plants are often reduced to backgrounds, interior details, or furniture. But plants are complex organisms deeply embedded in the world’s ecosystems.
The work presented at Møre og Romsdal Art Center, is an audiovisual installation with recordings from three different forests in Värmland in Sweden. A primeval forest at Fäntjärnsskogen forest nature reserve, plants in the ashes after a forest fire at Fräkensjömyrarna /Fräkenlake marshes nature reserve and a clear-cut in the forest east of Sunnemo (Värmland Sweden). The Duo Lerin/Hystad Simon Lerin and Bettina Hystad are both educated at Konstfack and the Royal Konsthögskolan in Stockholm, as well as at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bergen, Norway. The duo has participated in a number of individual and group exhibitions internationally. Lerin/Hystad are also active as musicians and have toured in Europe, China and Japan. The project in Molde is made possible with support from regional project funds from The Artcenters Norway/KIN.
