A conversation with Sayed Sattar Hasan

A conversation with the artist Sayed Sattar Hasan
Wednesday 23.September 2020
The conversation will be in English

Sayed Sattar Hasan is a British artist and a graduate from Goldsmiths College of Arts (MA 2009) currently based in Oslo, Norway. He uses a variety of mediums from photography to sculptural installation. His practice explores notions of tradition, heritage and belonging and how they are continually subject to change. Hasan often produces autobiographical narratives, based on his relationships with people, places and belief systems, and looks to express the fragility, humour and complexity of everyday life in his work.
His latest work “Hasansens Kjelke” ( The Toboggan of Hasansen) an exhibition produced by Trans cultural Arts Productions / TrAP is showing at Inter Cultural Museum in Oslo since February 2020
Inspired by the famous Norwegian Polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen , who developed his own sledge to cross Greenland in 1888, Sayed Sattar Hasan has fused traditional Norwegian and Pakistani crafts to to make a hybrid sledge. In doing so he has become Norways first traditional Charpai-Kjelke maker, under the new identity of Hasansen.
In Molde Sayed Hasan will talk about his practice and the issues he explores in his work. He will present a mixture of past works, with a strong focus on current projects such as ‘Hasansens Kjelke’ and how he as an artist can develop his practice further. The presentation will take the form of an informal conversation with the artist who is open for discussion with the audience.

Ski – Originates from the Norse word Skíð; which means to divide or split. The traditional process of making wooden skis involves felling a tree and splitting a log in two, providing material for each ski.
Charpai – A derivative from Hindi and Persian, meaning four feet. A charpai is a type of divan, common to south-Asia. It is typically used as a bed, or seat, and can be found in the home or outside.
Kjelke – The Norwegian word for sledge or toboggan.
Hasansen – A name which combines the artists surname ‘Hasan’, with the common Scandinavian name ending ‘sen’.
Influenced by his mixed-race identity, Hasan likes to negotiate tensions drawn by cultural and historical lines by embracing identity as a hybrid condition and expressing himself in unorthodox ways.
